THE REPRESENTATIVE
In one of Young (1991) stories, The Representatives, the young man stated in the last paragraph that "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell". Fully discuss this statement in terms of the political and social environment represented in Young's work. Is this story a reflection of post-independence Belize.

ReplyDeleteThe proverb “Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell” is a one of a kind. it’s rarely been used and hardly ever heard of throughout Central America ;furthermore, this proverb simply means “Some people are more fortunate than others.” In this case, only the government are benefiting while the country suffer. The reason being that the government are known for making wrong decisions, in which not only it affects the government on their part but also the Belizeans, for example the “Petro Caribe,” instead of using the money to help out the country and lowering the rate of poverty, the spend it on pure rubbish and nonsense and the worse part is that our own country has to pay more taxes to cover up the debts and their wrong decision making skills.
DeleteIn this story which is entitled “The Representative,” the proverb “Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell,” brings a powerful meaning to this story. This proverb also demonstrates the political power over the country which includes better lifestyle and a far better income ;moreover, it demonstrates the way of life of Belizeans everywhere. This story is a reflection of post-Independence because although the government had done their bad deeds, they interact with the youths by enrolling them in sports such as basketball and football.
I really like the way you said this, not sure if I agree with your example though. Yes, the government do make bad decisions. The example you mentioned about Petro Caribe is not true I believe, well partially. Why? Because the government is using some of the money to fix the streets and Belizeans are benefiting but they are also using it for rubbish. They can lower the rate of poverty with the money. But I think that will just be for the moment. When the money is finished, people that was living in poverty will be right back to square one.
DeleteI do believe that the politician are more fortunate then we the people because they can get anything done quickly not like us that need to wait for a long time to get something done. They just come and get our vote and forget about us completely. I also believe that they are using the Petro Caribe money to do nonsense with it but they need to make it seems like that’s not true so they use some of the money on repairing the streets and making new bridges. This ways nobody will suspect of them.
DeleteWhat you said about the government benefiting while the people suffer I find that to be true. The government be living a good life while the people suffer and work hard for a little bit of money that can hardly take them through a whole week. About the Petro Caribe thing i cant say if I agree or disagree because its always two side to a story. Some people will see the good things government do after they pay them off while others will see how cheap and selfish they are. Its such a shame when we see all the bad things the government do out there for votes but some actually have kind hearts and want to provide for the people, those few are scarce.
DeleteI kind of agree with you but i'm not sure about the example you give. The Government yes did rubbish and is still doing rubbish but the Pedro Caribe thing i'm not sure about because they said there using the money to improve Belize and in my eye sight i believe that Belize is being improved. I do agree with you when it comes to the expression though because it is true that the politicians are living "the life" while the poor people is trying to meet their day to day needs.
DeleteThe expression “Mary livin well while Marta Ketching hell’’ is that many of our young people don’t realize how good they have life until they lose everything in their way. Many of the politician are living better than their own people because some of them make us think that they can give us the world. Because of their small talk or their impression they can make us live well without any worries or stress in their eyes. We need to realize that we need to think before we react to different situations in life as people striving for a purpose or reason in life. Some of us need to look within our self for answers, while depending on others for such answers in our self as young generation for a brighter tomorrow. We all have challenges to overcome, it is up to us to choose a different path that can reflect on who we are, what we can accomplish, what can be the outcome, all of us has our own vision of being someone and find a career that we are interested in on the longer run.
ReplyDeleteYes, this story is a reflection of post-independence in Belize because many of the politician wants to come up on the young people, in this case many politician live better life than us in many ways because only when they want something from us for e.g. election. Then they remember their people. They should always have time for their people regardless of what it is, even to see how they are doing or what they can do for them in any means necessary. They only remember us when we are needed.
What you are saying is true because it is indeed a major toil in our society.People have the opportunity to live well or with a "gold spoon in their mouth" as the proverb my say, but on the other side of the glorious light there is darkness, for some people are not that lucky. The politicians for the most part are living better than the citizens. l
DeleteI agree with you when it comes to the expression "Mary livin' well while Martha ketching" and yes, too many of our youths are taking their lives for granted and they have no idea how precious their lives are. The harsh reality is that some people are more fortunate than others in terms of their lifestyle and well being.
DeleteI find the other part of the comment that you mentioned about the politicians I find quite amusing and truthful. Lets be honest, our government is well know for "selling us dream" and thinking that they can "give us the world." I ridicule their actions because a government can do so much for our country and there's a fine line between sense and nonsense. I think that the government should not making these so called "promises" because they can't keep to their word at all. The last paragraph which talks about the post-independent that I can't disagree because the fact that they love to bribe us, our government should indeed take time from their busy schedules to see how the people are doing.
I somewhat disagree here . The representative isn't a parent they're individuals representing the country on a certain portfolio, they help where they can. Then most belizeans talk about the idea of bribe and look at it in disgust yet you'll see individuals accepting the compensation, hypocrites I say, hypocrites .
DeleteIn the story The Representative the statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta Ketching hell”
ReplyDeleteSuggest the way of living that the people are facing in the story and since the story is based on political and social environment this implies that the political leaders are living a good life, in this case the Honourable Jonas Harold Parker, and the citizens are not living good; they are facing poverty.
Jonas the political leader is not concern about his people, he only cares to receive a high pay check and all the benefits that being in power brings. He had only been collecting his pay check and he forgot about his people for four years, abandoning them while he was living the good life. The people even forgot about Jonas that he existed because he was useless to them, good for nothing; while others are hard working to feed themselves but it still isn’t enough to maintain their family. The statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta Ketching hell” reflects Jonas the political leader living a good life while others are suffering in poverty and he doesn’t do anything to help his people.
This story is also a reflection of post-independence Belize and it gives a brief idea of how it has been ever since. Some of the leaders of the country of Belize had been acting selfish this way ever since Belize got their independence; the only thing some of them care about is just benefiting themselves from all the thing one could have with power.
What you are saying is true because today the politicians are not living up to their words and they are doing what they please instead of what pleases the people. They don't visit the people and see what condition and state they live in.Some of the politicians are not concerned about their people all they worry about is the votes that they need, so they could receive a higher pay. I think that politicians should at lease consider others and the needs of the people they are responsible for.
DeleteI totally agree with what you have posted. In this present century politicians are not standing and doing right for their people. They are mostly about themselves and how to make themselves more wealthy with a look as if they are not corrupt but doing the right thing even though they are bribing the votes from both the younger and older generations of this country. They are mostly hear to please themselves and not their people.
DeleteI agree with your input about Jonas the political leader is not concern about his people, he only cares to receive a high pay check and all the benefits that being in power brings. This also reflects on what is aslo happening in our country because in my own opinion i belive that some of our govenment leaders have does same characteristics as Jonas. then after a few years when election time is near again they want to visit people homes making promises.
DeleteIn this case you are definately right. One could be suffering in poverty while the politians are living a nice life. On your first paragraph you are just summarizing the entire story not explaining the proverb mentioned, but in your reflection you mentioned a good point which is true. Politians just care for you on election time.
Deletei agree with the idea of how positions only come to the people when it is important to them. You also covered a point where you mention the greed for money which is common on most politicians. In your reflection of post independence is "right on the mark" concerning how they only come around when election time is when you see the most work going on in their constituencies.
DeleteShona Chiac Popper,
DeleteYou are right about these politicians, they go around visiting people when they are in need, promising the people for changes and perhaps assistance in exchange for there vote. Often times the people fall for it and then later on they are all left there to strive on there own. While the one in power is living his merry life until next election again.
The statement “ Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell” simply means that Mary is living well because she depend on the politicians for everything that she have, while Martha is living by not depending on people for everything. Or she could be the type of person that doesn’t like hand outs. Today in the political environment the politicians are neglecting their constituency, for a long period of time, and then when Election Day draws near they will start to come around to campaign. They think that by giving the people a little money or a turkey and ham for a season they will get the people votes.
ReplyDeleteThe politicians will then start to be friendly, kind, and loving to all the people in their constituency just because they want the citizen’s support. They will start to fix streets, finish the unfinished roads, build houses for some people, and they will also give others land, hoping that they will vote for them. As soon as Election Day comes and they receive the votes that they wanted, you will not see them around as much. They will not be so free handed as first, and they will start to always find time for other things instead of the people.
As the statement stated “Mary living well while Martha ketching hell” it is just showing that the politicians are helping who they want instead of helping everybody. The people who are in power should always remember that the people are the ones that put them there so they should start to acknowledge that the people have higher power than them. So they should stop looking at us the way that they do and they should also stop criticising people who make lower income than them because we are all humans and we should be treated equally.

Tiffanie I really applaud about your interpretation of the expression "Mary livin' well while Martha ketching hell," ;furthermore, I like that you gave each detail about the expression which is top notch. I acknowledge the fact that the government is not very persistent in their constituency they should set the correct example. The only way that they would win if that they would bribe the people allowing them to win a vote or two. In the first sentence of the second paragraph which talks about the politicians' "two-faced" personalities , I totally agree with you because the only reason that they became so friendly an nice because they want something from us, which is a vote and once they got what they wanted, they will simply go back to their ungrateful dictatorship.
DeleteThe last paragraph you really gave out the truth because, the politicians want absolutely nothing to do with us and they only care for themselves. I find it quite disappointing that our own government discriminates on another just because of out income and status. Like you said previously in your comment "we are all humans and we should be treated equally."
Miss Tiffanie I agree with you but the last paragraph makes me agree even more. Politicians just don’t care about the lower people. All they care about is the people they know and themselves. Like you said, the people has the higher power and politicians should not forget them because they’re the ones who putted them there. Also, we are all humans so everyone should be treated the same no matter what.
DeleteMs. Tiffanie I also agree with what you said there. And the last paragraph really had me wondering why do Belizeans makes the politician take advantage of them because without the citizens votes the politician would have not been known today. They should start treating the people right and lot like any trash. We should all be treated equally.
DeleteI enjoy reading this tiffanie. By now i guess we can all tell what the politicians are like because they're all the same and they do the same thing yearly. Yes the politicians fix the street, give houses and land to people but most of them give to the people they want, like their family and friends. Some politicians only join politics to help family and friends. And you're right we put them there and we should move them unless their providing to the people and help making belize a better place.
Deletei agree with Tiffanie Staine where by the politician are only present and friendly wanting to lend a hand only when election time is near, after that they just vanish and no one barely hears about them.
DeleteI totally agree with your point, it's well said. At every time election is near that is when we see some work getting started, however if you all notice its not a job well done. To add to your list, side walks being constructed at the moment the contract is not yet complete and its already starting to crack. It seems as though they working and at the end they will mention so much money was used while it might not have been so. Like you said "they don't care about the people". They just want to be in power.

ReplyDeleteThe statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” sums up the story, The Representative, on a whole. In the story Mr. Young, who is the story writer, gives many descriptions of how Honourable Jonas Parker presented himself. It describes how Mr. Parker dressed himself in expensive and sophisticated clothing and the type of car he was driving was one of the best. The main reason why Mr. Parker decided to join politics was because of the three P’s mentioned in the story which were power, pay check, and perks. Mr. Parker didn’t join politics because he had good intentions for his area. He didn’t care of how the people lived and struggled to get what they wanted or what kind of streets they had to walk on. Mr. Parker neglected all of those things that a politician should do for his people.
ReplyDeleteThe people that lived in that area had their streets flooded because of the intense rain which caused many immense holes on the streets and they also struggled to even have purified water for them to drink. So ask yourself, where was Mr. Parker to help support these people? All of these people were living poorly, hence the reason why the statement says Mary livin’ well which represents the Politician living comfortably and while Marta livin’ hell represents the people struggling.
The story “The Representative” is a vivid reflection of post-independence Belize because in reality this is exactly what politician do. When its election time there is when you’ll see them trying to help people but otherwise, you won’t see them doing anything to help these people. Some politicians don’t exactly have the sincere intention of making their country a better place, maybe some do but they benefit from it also. The people needs action not empty promises.
Jacqueline I agree with what you said in your last paragraph that politicians only comes around on election time and on no other time. They only come to see if they can get your vote, because they don't really care about the way that you live.
DeletePoliticians should not be that way. they should always be around with the people socializing with them. they should not just keep a distance and watch they be around. They should always keep the people in their minds, and hearts always. they should not take from the people but they should give also.
I agree with you Ms.Orellana because I think most people go in politics because there is where they see a better living for them and their family. They see an easy way they can earn money without having to do a lot of work. They could be representing an area and never go about checking but as soon as election is coming up, they go about campaigning and still get their vote by bribing the people, and they should always remember that without the people, they would have been "a nobody"
DeleteI strongly agree with you Jacqueline that is the typical way of a representative behaviour when it comes to elections. When it is elections day they promise everything only for the people to give them their vote but when they done get the votes and position the want they totally forget about their promises and their duties as a representative. The same behaviour and description Hon. Jonas Parker develops in the story is exactly the same way representative from Belize are.
DeleteI agree with you to a certain extent. Yes, what you explained was right on point, I feel it was more of a summary or an impression on the essay, I still think you could have said more about the phrase.
DeleteYes the story is a reflection of the post- independence of Belize. This is still happening today, politicians try to bribe the voters to vote for them. Giving them temporary comfort until they are elected then disappear like magic and all the promises become untrue. The statement that Young mentioned in his work in a political view, is that the people in power such as politicians are living well while the voters, who elected them, suffer to provide basic needs for their family. In the story, the politicians lived on the other side of the city and the street the voter lived on was Wishwilly Street. The area representative neglected the area for four to five years. He doesn’t even know the names of the residence, who resides in the area. He was living well and didn’t care about the voters. You can tell from the way he talked to the young boy; but then he remembered that he was wasting time because only the mother can vote and she wasn’t present. He gave them five dollars and some sweets, as children they were delighted but they don’t know that he bribe them.
ReplyDeleteThe social environment of Young’s work is that of poverty. He describe the “wobbly bridge” that the representative had to walk on to reach the front door at the house. The children was at home alone with no babysitter. One of the child was around eight years old and wasn’t in school. Also Young describe the street that the voters live on, it has potholes and very muddy because of the rain. It was not a clean and healthy environment. Therefore, the statement in a social environment is that the politicians live in a healthy and clean environment while the voters live in an untidy and unhealthy environment.
I most certainly agree with your input. It is funny to see that we are oblivious to the fact that we have power. We put them in place with high hope, standards and regards. They never fulfill the duties they have to help us. And instead of us pressuring them for that we get happy to see them so we welcome them in our homes and think that things will get better or they will change, I think we need to wake up and realize all that we are capable of. We need to work on this generation and get back to our morals and follow our code of ethics.
DeleteI strongly agree with you on your point of view of bribery, but I kind of disagree with you on your point whereby you mention that the politician should help the people; yes that's their job and the reason the people put them their in the first place, but these people accepting these bribery needs to bear in mind that these politician are paying for these vote so they think that they don't owe anyone any thing cause they pay/buy those votes
DeleteIn the story “The Representative,” the young man said the phrase “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell.” By saying that phrase, it was referring to the representative whose name is Honourable Jonas Parker and the people elected him. The young man’s phrase just simply means that Mr. Jonas is living well while the people in his constituency are bad in terms of everything. The people on Wishwilly Street are struggling to make a life for four years and not once Mr. Jonas had come to visit them in his constituency. All of a sudden in the fifth year, Mr Jonas pop up in the area to greet people, look at their needs, and censoring the problems in the area. His visit wasn’t because he wanted, it was because he had to all because of election which was near.
ReplyDeleteSo he quickly came to visit his constituency to look at the living conditions and the struggles that his people face every day. To look at this story, it is a true reflection of post-independence in Belize. Anytime election is near, that is when you see the representative that had never seen before visit often. Before the year of election, nobody in the area see these representatives in their area. The representative have never take the time out to go and visit their constituency to see and discuss the different problems the poor people are facing every day. Jobs are still scarce to get for the young people, people are still eating bad, living conditions are still bad, and people are still walking on London Bridge etc. so it is indeed a true reflection of post-independence Belize.
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
I must say I particularly enjoyed reading your take on the proverb. Reading about the "London Bridge" and other vivid descriptions stood out for me and really helped me in understanding your point of view.
DeleteWhile I agree with your interpretation, I would also like to contribute by saying that Mary could also be the people of the higher class when looked at from a social environment's perspective. Also, your take on the relation of the prose to post-independence Belize is an interesting point of view since it puts together the general feeling of most Belizeans. However, I would like to mention that though some people in government share the same view as the Hon. Jonas Parker of the prose, there are other representatives that do work for the people and want to see a general improvement of the country's situation. Therefore, I think that both sides of the situation must be presented even if the positive portion might be minute.
The phrase “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” is plainly saying that Mary is living better than Marta that is trying to make ends meet.
ReplyDeleteComparing the phrase to today's political environment is like politicians and their families are living better than the lower people. Like in the passage, Honorable Jonas Harold Parker neglected his constituency for four years and now that election is around the corner he’s visiting the people in the area. They're living a better life because of the money or even illegals acts that they get paid for. This is what is happening these days in Belize. A lot of politicians abandon their constituency after being elected but as soon as election time again they come around. In their mind its like if you give the people a $50, a card for their birthday or ham and turkey for Christmas they will get the peoples vote.
Families are struggling in the story just as people are struggling these days. People are stilling using vats and buckets to get water. Some streets are full of potholes. When it rains the place get flooded because of the poor drainage. Some people are still using london bridges to get in their houses. This is a true reflection of post independence Belize.
I agree with the remarks you made Mrs Wade. People tend to be oblivious and practically sell themselves for vanity things that will only last for a short period of time. We are selling ourselves for less than 25 cents a day. We show minimal self worth which i find very sad. Politicians feel as though they can toy with people's emotions just because they are more fortunate. I feel as though if we can show them that we will not sell ourselves short and demand change then we will see the change we want.
DeleteWhen I read your comment I found it both interesting and logical to our present society. Some individuals have the world at their finger tips because of their money and connections to high power, while others have to fight and work hard for a meal to eat. Politicians as you mention have live GOOD for they have power, while the people who elected them that same power are the very same ones suffering
DeleteI agree with your points, like you said politicians live better than some citizens. These people believe that after every four years they can come and bribe the people to gain their vote. However, they neglect the peoples' calls for help within these years. This just shows the irresponsibility of some politicians and their ambition for power and money regardless the needs of citizens.
DeleteIn the story “The Representative” we see a statement which says, “Mary living well while Marta ketching hell”. This is very symbolic to the actions which take place in this story and of actions we currently see every day.
ReplyDeleteMany times in the political environment ministers tend to live a lavish, well put together lifestyle while the people they are representing are living in impoverished conditions. They have big houses and drive the best car which the people within the constituency can only dream of having. Honourable Jones Harold Parker is the area representative. He is going to attempt to win the hearts of the people who placed him into office, which he neglected. In the story many suggestions were made on behalf of Mr Parker's financial situation. It even gave us his motive for his involvement in this occupation which is the money. This is one of the main thing that ministers use as the reason why they want to be in office. They really don’t care about the people just the money.
The social aspect with the story is seeing how Mr Parker only impose on the people when he needs them to vote for him. He shows minimal concern for the condition and having empathy but is more concerned that he has to be around these conditions to interact with them. This is something that happens today whereby the higher class people act as if though they are so much better than people of lower class trying to belittle and isolate them. But on the other hand the people of the lower class act needy and treat them as if they are gods and so much better than them. They give them a reason to feel as if though they have power over them. Politicians try to empower people by selling them false dreams to just get a vote.
The story is a reflection of post-independence because we see the same thing happening in today’s society. The behavioural pattern has not changed throughout the years it is consistent. I feel as if though it was a current story because of the similarity in the events happening and behaviour the politicians/people have.
Young C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
I agree fully with what you stated here Miss Bennett because it is true that we see a lot of this occurring currently especially now that other national elections has been called on an early date. So, if we just look around we will see what the representatives who the people of Belize elect every election respond to our social problems. In my opinion, however, I believe that the social environment is a clear example problems which are being neglected by the representatives who Belizeans place in power "to represent" them because they do the complete opposite of what they promise and say they will do before elections. After elections it seems as if all the representatives suffer from a disease of memory failure which again is evident in our lives today so my belief is that the voters have resentment towards the representatives and lose hope in whatever they promise and that is why the young man in the book 'The Representative' stated "Mary livin well while Marta ketching hell" because in my perspective Mary is the representative living a great and lavish life after being elected into office and Marta is the voter who lives a struggling day by day after the elections.
DeleteReference: Young C.N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze:Cubola productions.
I fully agree with what you have stated about political enviromental ministers tend to live a lavish, well put together lifestyle while the people they are representing are living in impoverished conditions. In my opinion this is curently happening in Belize but when election they promise to assist in repair your house or building a house for u meanwhile their living in big houses and driving the nice cars. As in today in Belize it is a current situation that government leaders bribe the citizeans for thier vote. Also as you stated Belizean people have to know thier slef worth and not sell thier vote for 25 cents a day, they should vote for whom will make the country a better Belize not only the appearance of fixing the streets ect, but also impoving the education for the people
DeleteI agree with both Deadra & Aliyshia these are actions which happen everyday in our country. In society, The ministers are more fortunate and better off than the residents of their constituency. Although those were the same people who voted for them. Their supporters are neglected, left struggling, jobs are scarce and they are unable to provide for their families. Yes Aliyshia, I also believe that politicians suffer from amnesia loss of memory, after being voted in the area representative.
DeleteWell said, i must also mention that if you look around you every day so much people are poor and have no where to go. what is this government going to do about this. Mr. parker is like Dean Barrow in this case, he keep saying we build this, we build that but in reality the county is not improving. They say if we get in power your life will change,The question is how will he change your life when you cant change it your self? Like you said only a few benefit from it and because of this this country will never change.
DeleteIn the passage The Representatives, the proverb "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell" in my opinion is a reality in the Belizean society today. “Mary livin’ well” refers to the rich and wealthy people in our society. “The Rich” as we call them, has no worries in the world for everything is a given to them because of who they know and what they have. The next piece to the proverb, “…while Marta ketching hell” refer to poverty. People in poverty have a hard time just wonder what the next meal will be. While thing are just given to the wealthy because of their background and connections, poor people on the other hand have to work, and work hard for the same wealth ones. Overall I find the passage to be very interesting, for it captures the society which we as Belizeans are living. It gives an opportunity for you to stop and think and reflect to our everyday lives.

Khy i totally agree with your opinion. Why? Because it is true of course that many of the "rich or wealth" ones gain their power through connections. It is very rare to see a wealthy men or women uplift in society while going through any harsh treatment but when it comes to black people they have to go through the worst to upgrade their lives.
DeleteI totally agree with you. This is seen a lot in Belize today. The people who are in a higher status in life tend to have more power and forget the one who place them at that position. I do believe that Belizeans need to reflect on themselves and do the right thing instead of what they need at the moment.
DeleteI believe that what you've said is perfectly right, we see this all over the country of Belize. It is very sad; but true to say that wealthy people have many more advantages compared to lower class people. It is very unfair that due to them having connections they can have a better life than other hard working people out there.
DeleteFor me personal what think it meant by the statement “Mary livin well Marta ketchin hell” mention by the young man in Pataki Full is that all the politician is living the good while the poor is still living in hard times. This statement and story is very true as it relates to what is currently happening in Belize. Election is drawing near in Belize and politicians wants to win at any cost whether it be bribing Belizean with a few couple of dollars or as we all know it is raining season, but that wouldn’t stop them from walking on your knock and stand up bridge to come see you in the rain or walking in the mud to show you that they care and the tell you all these promises and reassuring that would be a problem anymore and they will up and down on that bridge until election is over they one won, and nothing happens for you when rain comes again you still have to put up back your knock and stand up. The only times you got to see that politician was the times they come to your house; which is like three times for five years. Then you stay there suffering while Mary livin well while Marta ketching hell, but this case politician are living the good and rich life you still poor, broke, and hungry.
ReplyDeleteThis story is indeed a reflection of pro-independence Belize because as I mention earlier on election is coming up for Belize and people that you haven’t seen in real life except on TV and this I mean the politician will be showing up to house and all of a sudden they know your name and they start telling you all the magic tricks they will perform for you but after that election and they won they magically disappear or they develop amnesia and don’t remember their job and the reason you put them there.
Young C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
Jana it is true what you stated, politicians do make a lot of promises, promising to make a difference in the country. But we all must keep in mind that "promises are made to comfort a fool". They go are around from houses to houses fooling us just to continue voting for them so they can continue living and enjoying their luxurious lives unlike most of us struggling to get what we need. It is true we only see them once in a blue moon actually that is only when election time is around when they go around begging and bribing those they can because they are scared of loosing their pay check and afraid enough to loose the silver spoon they are feeding themselves. with.
DeleteSo true Jana. For the past few years I personally never see my area representative and now that election is called I see him everyday. He comes around with the same old promises. Like the phases say "a promise is a comfort to a fool." When voting we as Belizeans need to think long term and stop thinking short term because short term goal will not make it to the long term goal when it has to deal with a politician.
DeleteI stand in full agreement with you Ms Belgrave, because it only when election time is near that your representative comes around and proclaim to be someone that they aren't. They would go around the area a few weeks before the election doing whatever it take to get your votes. Have you hanging on to promises that they won't fulfill, because after the election it's like they've catch bad case of amnesia.

ReplyDeleteThe story ‘The Representative’ written by Young Colville.N. in 1991 portrays a taste of Post-Independence in Belize. Throughout the story, numerous examples of how life was for both types of people living in Belize. Those two groups of people are the representatives (government officials) and the people who elected them. In the story ‘The Representative’, however, the persons whose jobs were “to represent” did the contrary of this. In the last paragraph of the story one of the main characters who was a young man stated “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”, this statement gives an example of the political and social environment of Belize at that time.
ReplyDeleteSocial and political problems are evident throughout the story. Social problems are those general factors that affect and damage society some examples from the story are the streets flooding horribly after heavy rains, potholes in the street, and person walking on lengths of woods set on blocks to form pathway bridges to get from point A to point B known to Belizeans as “landing Bridges”. In addition, political problems arises from the social problems, these are the controversies within the political system. In the statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”, Mary is set out to be the representative whose job is to “represent” who pleads to the voters when elections are slowing approaching and Marta “who is ketching hell” is in this case the voter.
The statement symbolizes that the representatives live a great life and is happy with the results after being elected into office. Whereas the voters represent the social life, the voters live a struggling life and indulge in many social problems which let them to believe that the representatives are neglecting them after the election. The social problems with society can either affect the political system because the people of the country grow resentment towards the representatives they elect. This resentment, however, causes the people of a country to lose hope in the representatives and don’t look forward to an election anymore. So, when an election is approaching and the representatives try to campaign for votes they do not receive a warm welcome by those who voted for them before and this cause a uphill battle in the economy as shown in the story ‘The Representative’.

In the Short story the Representative, the proverb “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” basically sums up the whole story and portrays a bit of Post-Independence in Belize. in the story it shows how the honorable Jones Harold Parker, like many politicians in Belize, use the people living in their constituency by bribing them to get a singe vote. Many times these representatives neglect their constituency to the extent that some citizens have no idea who their area representatives are. Then on the days nearing to election, they come around for the first time with money, groceries and smiles to show their "appreciation" and to give especially to the people living in poverty knowing that they will be grateful for the things that they will receive. Citizens fail to realize that they are the ones allowing these people to take advantage by voting for them. they forget their worth by giving into the bribe and accepting a little bit of nothing for a vote.
ReplyDeleteThe proverb “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” shows that the people living in government and the ones that THEY vote for (Mary) are the same ones driving nice cars and living in fancy house and basically having everything fed to them on a silver platter while the poor ones (Marta) are the ones that live in environments where the streets are broken, crossing "london bridges" and having to work really hard for a single meal to last them through the day. These are only some of the social issues that people face on a daily basis and citizens fail to realize that they are the ones that have the power in their hands to make a change by one vote. These things occur when the people are unaware of the things happening in the society and allow the ones in government to take advantage. Citizens just need to be more aware of the things taking place in their society and understand that they can change all that by a singe vote.

I like the way you expressed the statement and its indeed right what you said. All the politicians not just the Prime Minister are feeding themselves with a silver spoon while the poor ones are struggling to even put a plate of food on their table, that is if they even have one. The people of the country really need to open their eyes and observe what is really happening around them and make the right decision, they have the power in their hands to make a difference in the country. Most of them really don't understand they have control on the politicians because they are blinded with bribes to see what they can really do and the changes they can make.

ReplyDeleteThe statement "Mary livin' well while Martha ketching hell" is reflecting Mr.Parker's and the young man and his family's lifestyle from my perspective. "Mary livin' well" is referring to Mr.Parker since he's the one living a good life. Because Mr.Parker is involve in politics he have an advantage over the others and tend to brag about being the one to help provide for them which I find to be immature. Only because election was near Mr.Parker went around visiting homes acting like he's concern about the people which I feel he don't because he only want vote. "Martha ketching hell" refers to the young man and his family because they didn't have life too good. Wood set on blocks to form a bridge was what Mr.Parker had to pass to get in to the young man's yard from the street. Mr.Parker tried to bribe the young man with money and his little sister with candy only to get vote from their parents. If it wasn't election time Mr.Parker wouldn't go through all these trouble but only for the love of vote he's doing it.
ReplyDeleteYes this story is a reflection of post-independence because what Mr.Parker did was go around only for vote and only around election time he do visits to homes. Today we are seeing the same thing being done which is sad being they only use the people for vote. They get votes by paying them or do something big in the city to get attention and likes letting the people think that's what they're going to do yearly.

I really liked the way you expressed yourself and the confidence you had in your answer and i agree with you fully. Mr. Parker doing that only showed immaturity within himself as an Area Representative, just like the Area Reps are doing today. They are supposed to be the ones setting the examples and doing ignorant stuff like that will not help the society any at all. they use and abuse people only to get likes and i really hope that the people of today realizes what is happening and change their way of voting.
DeleteIn the story “The Representative” (1991), the author Mr. Colville Young vividly expresses the view points of both the people in society that are living in immense poverty, and a minister who seems to care more about his financial stability than the voters/community. The story emphasizes on two young children who were solely at home, when a minister came to greet the people in his constituency. Remotely unfazed by his presence, the children took the offerings of the minister, while he was giving his rather irrelevant speech, and when the minister finished and finally left, one of the children uttered “Mary livin’ well while Marta Ketching hell”. What was meant by this child’s remark?
ReplyDeleteIn a political sense, the phrase can be defined as a significant aspect. While the minister is driving around in his new Buick with air conditioning, the children however do not have this luxury. So the expression proves that while the minister is living nicely, and is financially stable, the children are living in what they classify as hell. However in a social environmental sense, the conditions of their living quarters was considered normal for the residence of the constituency, as oppose to the minister these conditions seem unbearable and intolerable. While the minister is more financially stable/well-off the children are living in poverty, walking through mud and debris to get to the old rickety bridge to enter their home.

The phrase, “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” is basically saying that Mary is someone whom is depends on politicians and their hand outs in order for her to survive and get by in her daily life and living and even fall for their lies; while Marta seems to be the type of person whom is head strong and does not depend on politicians for her day to day survival. In addition, based on the passage it can be said that Honorable Jonas Harold Parker and his people has both forgotten about each other because he is a strange face to the community and is not certain as to where certain residence reside. Furthermore, unlike Mary whom is “living lavida loca” Marta is an independent and self relied person whom strives for what she needs on her own. Nevertheless, it doesn’t take away the fact that the community is living in poverty because they have not received any assistance from their minister. Therefore, I do agree in saying that story a reflection of post-independence of Belize because politicians are aware that they can bribe they younger generation into falling for their lies, small schemes and money in order to gain their support in them gaining riches and the poor remaining at that same status because the are unaware of what is really happening with politicians.
ReplyDeleteYoung C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
In one of Young (1991) stories, The Representatives, the young man stated in the last paragraph that "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell". In my perspective this statement is clear enough to distinguish the lives of the politicians and those that place them in the positions they are in (the voters). “Mary livin’ well” are the politicians because we all know their standard living and the way they don’t have to struggle in life like most of us fighting to get what we want and most of all to get what we need. They have an easy way to life. “While Marta ketching hell” is portraying the voters, life is complicated for them; things don’t come as easy as for those that are involved in politics and their way of living is not to be compared to the politicians. Being a politician is just about the pay check not really about the people like they would say; they pretend a lot to be so concerned about ones living but in reality they are not, politicians usually pretend to care about your situation when election time is around. The passage clearly stated that where by Honourable Parker is now concerned about the neighborhood or should I say his consistency whereby he is strolling around in his Hilux vehicle stopping by those who he thinks are his people and bribing for vote again so he can continue enjoying his luxurious life.
ReplyDeleteThis is course are clear reflection of the post-independence. We all know that our politicians play the same the role in today’s society. Sooner or later or perhaps they already begun; expect a few them to show up to your doorstep. Pretending to be so caring and a concerned politician about the country and its people. Once all this is over they all go back under their caves.
Young C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
It is absolutely true what you have stated must politician don’t have any struggles in life. They get whatever they wants but for the rest of us we need to struggle through life and work really hard. But must people fall into their traps, they believe in them swearing it is totally true what they are saying. But what they don’t know is that they will never see them around again for a while, the people are so clueless of them thinking that they will soon have a better and brighter future by the help of them. But they are so selfish acting like they forget about the people but all of a sudden they remember when elections are near. That’s when they need the help of the people and when they get the help they need they just go back to their fancy lifestyle forgetting about everybody else.
DeleteIts true politicians don't do care for the voters or people but they only want the position and the standard of living a politician have. Elections are next month and politicians already are going house to house with a nice smile on their face like if they really care about you or the consistency. right now they will be behind you to vote for them but after elections finish they will forget about you and they will not even help you but yes you will need to continue working for yourself or your family while they are in their all fashion house, vehicle and enjoy the people's and country money. Representative are the most selfish person because they only think for their benefit and not in the people benefits.
DeleteMs Tush i believe what you're saying is true, year in year out is the same dilemma. Politicians aren't doing their job, they only choose to a representative because they see it as an opportunity to better the lives of their families, friends and themselves. they're in this thing for the money not for the love of the people. They only go to hear from the people when election time is near and they want the people to vote them in again. It's only then that they listen to you and promise to give whatever it is that you're asking for.

ReplyDeleteIn one of Young (1991) stories, the Representatives, he stated in the last paragraph that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. This basically talks about a politician who did not serve the people and was just there to collect a paycheck. “He sighed for the thousandth time wondered why he did not take his wife’s advice and leave politics; but he knew very well what the reasons were: the three p’s.......paycheck and (whispered it) the doubted perks”. This quote is a strong evidence that Mr. Parker, the politician, was ‘living well’. He was well-dressed and drove an air-conditioned Buick, all of this shows that he was indeed living well. Since there was an upcoming election, honorable Jonas Harold Parker had to go out and meet with the people of his constituency (keep in mind that this is the first time he’s going to meet with his people, since the last time he was elected). He went to a household where only siblings was home. Because he did not visit these houses in his area very often, he was not sure who lived there and vice versa the little girl whom answered the door of a house he visited, did not know who he was, and because of his apparel, she thought that he was her uncle from states. This also implies that this politician was well-dressed which, means that he was living well; he had money to buy nice clothes and expensive vehicle.
ReplyDeleteThe people of Wishwilly Street weren’t living in a healthy condition. The street was in poor condition and yards were totally covered in water, “Of course, water remained in the innumerable potholes in the street. As to the yards, most of them were totally covered. In these unwanted backyard pools swam mosquito larvae and tadpoles and the overnight spawnings of the finger-long fish locally called poopsies.”
This story is a perfect reflection of post- independence Belize because these politicians tries to buy over votes from people, especially, young people. They also wait until election is near so that they can try and do some work in within their constituency. When they (politicians) get in, they collect handsome amount of money and buys the latest of vehicle and the most expensive pair of jeans.
Young C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
It truly reflects the scenario as to what the boy had spoken. He very well knew the situation and because of that gave an attitude to the representative. That, however, only brought out his true personality which is taking offense to anyone who opposes him. Parker only cared for his own wellbeing and could care the slightest towards even his own area of where he was elected. Your comment is absolutely right as it shows that he had faint memory of the people who inhabited the area, he had to refer to his documents to decide whom lived there. Vice versa for the inhabitants who also had little knowledge of this strange, high classed individual. Parker had neglected his area and the only thing that had pushed him to visit is that he was given an ultimatum. Reflecting his little care he has towards anyone who is not directly linked to him. The family, and along with the entire area lived in poverty while he was living in pure luxury. Him claiming that 4 thousand was little while others within the area could only dream about that amount of money befalling them. It is indeed a reflection to post independence Belize. Some examples with this passage are almost identical as to the situation our people face from these politicians. Like them neglecting their area until election, bribing people, dress- down and even the potholes within the street that the politicians were supposed to be responsible for.
DeleteI totally agree with you especially where you mentioned that "these politicians tries to buy over votes from people, especially, young people". This is so true, and the young people willingly take the money and vote for them not even considering how and IF the representative that they are voting for is going to benefit and improve the conditions of their environment or constituency.

ReplyDeleteThis Statement “Mary livin’ well while marta ketching hell” simply means that “Mary livin well” refers to the representative (Mr. Parker) that is living his life good due to politics. He hardy visit his constituency like stated in the story “The Honourable Jonas Harold Parker (‘the silver tongued talker’) was, unusually, visiting his constituency.” You can know that he was living life good because of “he had parked his air- conditioned Buick on the edge…” Probably a Government vehicle because he don’t want to go with his around those area. “Marta ketching hell” now then refers to the people that live in that constituency that are going through tough times and the area representative doesn’t even about them until now because “ next election was not due till the end of the year,….”. He wants to win in his constituency again to continue living his good life and to also make his party wins (every vote counts).
ReplyDeleteYes. This story is a reflection of post-independence Belize; because this is want exactly happens up till now in our country Belize. They will go about bribing you with money or dreams like giving you a land or building you a new house for you and so on and on. I have a neighbour that they told that crap to from last election and nothing happens up till now. They only care about themselves/ family. They also promise jobs to youths in my area and that still doesn’t work. They rather give their family that is not even qualified for the job. Those who are qualified have a slim chance to get those good jobs because of those same Politian’s. I’m straying away now so I will finish now by saying my favourite phrase “Money talks Bullshit Walks”.

The writer stated in the book Pataki Full “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. This statement means in the political environment the area representative are not fulfilling their responsibility. The representatives only comes around when election time by then the people living in the environment do not have a stable home, life style and their not familiar with the area representative.
ReplyDeleteYes, this story is a reflection of Post-independence in Belize, because the political environment is still using their power to manipulate the people. Many of our Belizeans depend on some of the politicians, they would basically do anything for them. While the politicians are living good and their lives are unstable.

ReplyDeleteThe phrase "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell” in a political sense means that as one party reaps the other suffers. for example if the “Peoples United Party” gets into power the strong headed “United Democreatic Party” supports will not get any business from the supporter affiliated with the “Peoples United Party”. The system in which the government is very corrupt in the sense that our people admire our positions so much that they would do anything for them, Not realizing the reality of it all is that while our people suffer from poverty our same positions make enough money to give out bribes instead of helping the people.
ReplyDeleteThis story is a reflection of post-independence Belize; because in this novel its gives detail examples of the same crisis we have been in for years. An example given is that when election time comes everyone in their division works hard to make it look as if they were working from the start. New roads, streets, and houses are build for the people all for show to get your vote. Bribery has always been popular among positions but in my opinion it has never been more popular. The end goal of this is just to buy your vote and collect millions of dollars which was dependent on your vote.

I fully agree to what you are saying, especially how the "die haad UDP or PUP" act towards each other. Also like at this moment there is a lot of promotions being given out, a lot of rally's with free food and drinks and entertainment for the whole family. There you go with the bribery. There is also the commercials now in full swing attacking one another ,saying one is a hypocrite and the other is a liar.Us as Belizeans need to get our heads out of the clouds and start thinking and stop being arrogant towards the facts.
DeleteI never saw that standpoint before. But I can see where you're coming from. In a sense yes, it could be considered as it reflecting the politicians. However, that could be understood as an over analysis of the topic. In my opinion, the main idea for the statement was to reflect the situation of the people within the area and the position their representative was in. Mary being the persona for Jonas Parker, along with every other wealthy politician, and Marta reflecting not only the area which Parker was representative but all the individuals within a ditch. Ditch simply meaning a rough time in life, experiencing hardship after hardship and so on. Nonetheless, your take was quite intriguing and it was explained quite well. And lastly, it is indeed a reflection of post independence Belize with it's many, almost if not, identical references to the state that our country has been facing for decades and still continuing.

ReplyDeleteIn the passage extracted from the Pataki Full, it speaks of a political representative visiting citizens to hopefully get them to vote for him in the upcoming elections. I agree that the extract is a representation of a post independence era in Belize because it describes the way politicians behave today. Little before elections representatives would visit parts of their constituency and make all kinds of fraudulent promises to citizens and some times even hand out small financial aid, just to get citizens to vote for them to stay in power, as soon as elections are over they are never seen again. this is exactly what our representatives do today. The writer also used the statement "Mary living well while Marta ketching Hell" to describe the representative in this extract. "Mary living well" is saying that ministers are having a nice life that entails a lot of unnecessary vanity and power while others are struggling just to feed themselves. this statement describes the politicians in every way possible because they have what was referred to in the extract as the three Ps, "power" "paycheck" "Perks" with this politicians take advantage of the government system as well as citizens. Being a representative they make big decisions that benefit themselves and their immediate family. being paid far more money than is necessary and still some of them steal money.Taking masses of lands in their ownership on the other side "Marta ketching hell" for the average person its hard just to buy a small land to build a house. working at minimum wages barely making the next meal. having only one form of power and that is to vote for the representative just so that they can abuse their power and care less for the less fortunate.

ReplyDeleteThe Phrase " mary livin' well while marta ketching hell" means that their are people who are living great lives while other are struggling on a daily basis. these also refers to the story the representative where Honorable Jonas Harold Parker is describe as a man to have some form of wealth. As described in the story he had a nice " air conditioned buick" and the story also stated " he had also decided to take a few of the children into his arms in spite of the accident that had literally messed up an expensive shirt" which we can tell that he is man who wears very expensive name brand shirts. The story also give facts about why Hon. Jonas Parker wanted to be a politican as said in the story "the three p's" which are Power, paycheck and perks. Three things which I believe most politician today stay in the game for. As you can see where the government today is using these same advantages they get for their own personal gain , they pretend to try and help other but in the back door they are taking money from the people. "marta ketching hell" is about those people who live in poverty and are being taken advantage of. In the story it is known that Hon. Jonas Parker have hardly visited his constituency but now the time for election have come around and suddenly he began to show up bribing others in hopes of winning the people vote in his area so they he may once again have power to gain from his position. This same thing is a good reflection of Belize post- independence; because this is what happen when election time comes around where people votes are being bought ,handing out money to the poor and those people most vulnerable not knowing how it affects them in the longer run. A couple dollars will only last a while.

I agree with you on the points you made that the story reflects some of the same things that are presently happening in Belize, like politicians going politician pretending to go out the way for poor people and also going into politics for their own personal gain, but mainly power and the paycheck; then they turn their back and look down on the poor and forget that the same poor people are the same ones who give them their power and have the right to take it away.
DeleteI strongly agree with you political representatives would only visit you when they need your vote, but when you need from them you'll be sure not to find them. they'll be always giving excuses not to attend you. yes all political people would tend to buy your votes but come one citizens where did the morals and values stay? that money won't even be worth your further suffer but all of them are the same. they only aim for the position and the money.
DeleteI somewhat agree with you......yes these politicians buy over votes but indeed where are the individuals that are being bought over morals and values?? At the end of the day, the society already know the way these politicians and leaders operate so the people of the society needs to stop "living" off these "representatives" and stop depending on them because in the end you're still not getting any help...

ReplyDeleteReferring back to the previous paragraphs, the writer uses several techniques in essay writing to place you in the time of this situation . After using descriptive words for the setting, we the readers are actually seeing what is happening, how the street looked, the living conditions, how innovative ideas for bridges are constructed. So when the young man says, “Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell”, he is talking about the struggles the people in the area are facing, Martha, as opposed to Mary being the representative, living as comfortably as possible. He is simply using a small phrase to say something much more.
ReplyDeleteThis story is the most accurate representation of post independence Belize. Over the years, while we would have expected change, that is not so in Belize. Yes, although characters change, over the years, the roles are still the same. In fact this is occurring presently, we see the signs, and the work. But how will they keep it up. And when the time comes closer, they’ll do the same thing as the representative, the will go door to door, buying votes.
Young, C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola oroductions
I agree with what you stated yes we were to expect changes to be done to our country but all our ministers care are the extra money they are recieving and with this money none of them are not helping the people that actually need it. They are already going door to door filling peoples heads with dreams that they will not fulfil. they are only saying all of this to buy the votes of the people.
DeleteIn the story “The Representative”, by Sir Calvin Young, there was a quote stated by the young man in the last paragraph that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. This quote is quit powerful in meaning and what it’s actually referring too. Here is a break down:
ReplyDelete• “Mary”- The Honorable Jones Harold Parker (the government if will)
• ‘Marta”- The people of his constituency (or the voters)
• “Mary livin’ well”- stated in the story the reason for his continuous stay in politics were due to the 3 p’s: Power, Paycheck, and Perk. With those three main things Mr. Parker has life easy. Food and money at his disposal.
• “while Marta checking hell”. – For four year Mr. Parker has neglected his constituency and until a year pier to elections and was given an ultimatum, he had no chose but to finally visit his area. Which was pools swam mosquito larvae, tadpoles and metamorphosed frogs lifting their voices in a mournful chorus. Also having to cross a bridge made of wood set of blocks to reach the front door gave an imagery of the living environment of these people. The household these children lived in, children raising children, is not stable. Living wasn’t easy for these people.
From what I’ve read to what I’m seeing now politics hasn’t really changed. Our leader bribe there was into power and bribe to staying in power just for the sack of money and the perks it brings. Our poor fellow Belizean can’t really see past the $200 or the little piece of land they are given just for one vote for one man/woman who lives off the hard work of the tax payers. We need to stop focusing on the little things that we see like the new streets and focus on the bigger picture “Who is going to pay back the loans?” No other than us the people that has living hard and who works hard for a living.

i thnik this was wonderfully though out and i liked the way you explain the phrase to the fullest extent. Also your use of descriptive words were superb. i agree pertaining to when you said that positions visit an area when elections come around and that is usually the case with most politicians. i also like the way you broke down the whole phrase so that if u didn't understand it is it much more clear.
DeleteBut look at an even bigger picture; our children and grandchildren will be paying back for the streets that we can barely enjoy. Today Belize has seen many changes but we must realize that it is only getting worse and even more while they will be living well, us Belizeans will be catching hell. Soon the power that these people hold will take toll on us and more and more our days will be numbered to a higher poverty rate. It is sad to watch how our supposing leaders get in front of the cameras and promise a better living, but just how long will a better living last?
DeleteThe statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” in Young’s work is saying that the people on Wishwilly street who have to be begging and stealing water due to the shortage of rain and the vats have run dry are the Marta who are living hard and Hon. Jonas Parker is Mary. In the works of Young he mentioned it for himself that he didn’t want to leave politics because of the pay check, power and perks they would get while on the other hand the people are living having a hard time even mentioning areas that the people were in.
ReplyDeleteYes this story is a reflection of post independence presently the elections are coming up and you see signs, billboards and other stuff with people that you haven’t seen since the last election. These Representatives will soon start to also visit people homes and try to bribe them with money so they can vote for them. This is not right because they have been unknown for three to four years and suddenly feel the need to help people so they can get votes. I feel that the Representative is a good example of this.

Second in motion with your statement about politics. You see billboards went up with the blink of an eye. All of a sudden, the streets are decorated with billboards with the area representative name on them. Fortunately, my area repreentative is already in my area start visiting people regularly asking what they need etc. I found it so amazing that you statt to see them coming around asking people what are their needs and problems in the area. it's just logic.
DeleteWell done Trinity, I think you brought out as much as possible, to explain the phrase, out of the essay. With that I must agree. The last paragraph was the best part, taking about the current situation, and comparing those times to now.

ReplyDelete“Mary Livin’ well while Marta ketching hell,” a statement which was spoken by the young boy in the last paragraph, can be analysed in two perspectives. It is both political and social standpoints that outline the state of the two clashing forms of society. Nonetheless, the message trying to be brought across is nothing short of marvellous. First, from a social perspective it can be examined as ‘Marta’ not only representing the family that lives in indefinite poverty, but, it being the entire community. The reason for this is because from the extract there is significant proof that the community has been neglected and obviously suffering the effects of their ‘honourable’ representative who was supposed to be their saviour. The streets being bombarded with potholes that do nothing but be a shelter for unwanted water. And, one of the most notifiable form of evidence is the family’s “precarious bridge,” basically meaning it being seen as hazardous and not even fit for an establishment. Further proving the point that Marta is the embodiment of the community suffering in harsh conditions. However, Mary, being the persona reflecting the higher ups within society, is living within luxuries while the rest of the community struggle just to make ends meet. Within the extract, the only true glimpse of the glamorous section of the society is none other than the ‘silver tongued’ Jonas Parker. From the moment he arrived at the home, his obvious sign of wealth was made visible. Parking his Buick, a vehicle that cannot be earned from mere minimum wage. Another is him being “too well dressed,” that is basically saying he was trying to stoop down to the plain field that society is upon. His high status is made clear and thus it depicts the two sections of society. To conclude the argument of the sections of the community, Marta is the persona reflecting the slums of society, that struggle just to survive, and Mary representing the higher status of society that feed upon wealth and completely disregard the harshness that those face around them.
ReplyDeleteThe Representative is indeed a representation of post-independence Belize because of the fact that it is something still practiced currently within the country. An example of this is the bribe that Parker offered the two kids, clearly outlining the way in which representatives got into power and remained there; steadily supplying lies, bribery and desertion to the community. Neglecting of the community is also something that has remained from the days before independence and still practiced even up to today by politicians who only turn to their people when the season of voting is underway. In conclusion, it is indeed a reflection of post- independence Belize because it undoubtedly depicts both society today and the way how politics operate in this day in modernity.

Great use of the information to support your points. Also a reason for why he may be called "silver tongue" is the fact that he knows how to bribe his way in and out of situations. That is one thing our dear politicians can do, get themselves in and out of things with the use of there "silver tongues".

ReplyDeleteThe Phrase “Mary Livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” represents that fact that the politicians all live great lives due to the fact that they have more than enough money to survive with it could easily be proven that the politician in the story “Representative” lived quite wealthy and was more fortunate than others with in his constituency because even though his wife tells him to quite being a politician he refuses to listen to her because of something he calls the three p’s (power, paycheck and perks) so it is proven that politicians do live well so in other words “Marta Livin’ well” is in fact a true statements. On the other hand let’s look at the other part of the statement “Marta ketching hell” well firstly we could start with the fact that on Wishwilly street which is a very dirty road can became a really flooded area when it rains frequently which means that most of the residence on that road including the boy and girl that the politician talks to are constantly living in a flooded environment that harbors a lot of insects and animal due to the water. So the boy says this statement to prove that politicians live good lives in great environments while citizens of their individual constituency live really rough lives in bad environments.
ReplyDeleteWhile looking at the phrase and comparing it to the government and there practices up to this year 2015 not much has changed politicians are still always invisible and only show their faces when times for elections are near and they then feel the need to buy votes for themselves. So while new politician are always changing and elected it can surely be said that each and every political leader live happy lives in comfortable home while many others in life live in dreadful environments. I highly agree fixing the roads in Belize is great but that’s not the only issue in Belize and I feel that instead of distributing money to different causes which could better Belize almost all the money Is wasted on one problem which has its benefits but like I said there are many other problem why only focus on one.
Young C.N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
We can definately say politians are representatives only for the money they are paid for. Unquestionably you have proved the point that politians year after year are the same not worrying about the people of Belize. They never show their faces until elections. They bribe the people to vote for them and like you said our people are ketchin hell they accept the money from the politians not thinking of it twice. Yes, you are right on the part you said that fixing the roads of Belize is not the only problem occuring in our country. Politians bribe our people by just focusing on the roads and lights of some areas while not helping with the bigger problems occuring. Instead of wasting money on Election campaigning they should focus on the education of our children and youths. Like I said with this kind of government our country will never prosper.
Delete"Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell"
ReplyDeleteBased on the story "The Representative", this Proverb uniquely suggests that politians living a wonderful life while the citizens are unfortunately suffering in poverty. The young boy reluctantly said this phrase as he stared outside the door. He knows that Jonas Parker, The Representative, is living at a high standard of life wile they are peasantly suffering in a place where there is no succeed. Jonas was forgotten by his people for he only wanted their vote not that he cared for them some how. He went all of a sudden to visit, dressed up nicely, not knowing what these people are going through and the serious problems they are facing everyday.
The burden of poverty alongside with swarms of hungrily mosquitos, the primitive drainage system, shanty houses are all a reflection of Post- Independence Belize. However, this inspiculous situation has not changed a bit. This wheel of bad politians continues over and over. New politians are elected and living comfortably while the people of Belize are forgotten until election time. Why can't there be honest politians which can make our country prosper? Belize is a third wolrd country and it will never prosper due to government it has. If no one deals with this situation our country will fall into poverty, crime, etc, and will never develop.
Young C.N. ( 1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
I totally agree with your post. This is because all that you have stated is currently happening in our society and persons aren’t realizing that they are at the shorter end of the stick with all the unfair deals they are being offered just so that the politician, whom are robbing them daily basis, gaining their votes for them to continued be treated unfairly and be forgotten until the next election term comes around when they would need their vote once more. It’s time for people to wise up and no longer stand for these types of petty bribery.
DeleteElection is around the corner and like if it was Christmas the ornaments are coming out once again. Candidates roaming the streets, wearing their friendliest smile, ready to distribute their warmest hugs and most confident inspiring handshakes to all but the all too good friendly loving attitude of them caring for you the people. In one of Young’s (1991) stories The Representative the young man stated in the last paragraph that “Mary livin well while Marta ketching hell”. In terms of political and social environment represented in Young’s work this story is indeed a reflection of Post-Independence Belize. In its political aspect a representative is assigned to each area therefore their responsibility is to maintain for that area, improve it provide with the peoples demand not for only when election is close, it’s become a common practise they to abandon their area 4-5 years come election day they remember once again that they have an area in need of votes. Now on the social environment they knock on your door here they come with a group of supports behinds them for once in your life you have an exchange of words feeling as if through they really care just to find out later that after their victory they rise upon their seats and totally have forgotten who you are. For their lavish lifestyle continues as our struggle lifestyles never ends and the cycle repeats its self once again for we have political aspiring of candidates in search of so much more than what people have been begging for years. This cycle will never end.
ReplyDeleteYoung, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
nicely said ms. Wendy, i totally agree to what you say about representatives compare to today's society interms of politics. The representatives of today are still doing the false promises. The minute election is near, that is when you see your area representatives that you only seen like two times per year come around. They come around knocking on people's door pretending like they're so care for everyone in theeir constituency. The thing they don't know is that, some poeple may be fool with their politicking, but others don't. some poeple still take their money and vote them out.
DeleteAs election takes place this is the time we ofter see you representatives like Wendy stated. In addition to her contribution about this is not only do politician campaign but the give out money, food only for one time games. For these people who take advantage of the gifts are not for ever.Life is hard especially here in Belize city and some people like hands on money, money that they did now sweat for.Belizeians need to do better, because if they continue to pay with politics this country will be in big jeopardy.so we need to fined a responsible Goverment and sto accept bribery.
Delete. From the statement, “Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell” in the last paragraph of the extract, it can be implied from a political point of view that Mary is symbolizes by the politician to whom benefits from being elected; and therefore Martha would be the voters who on the other hand gains nothing. It can be said that in the field of politics those with power will benefit and those without will struggle. As stated in the extract for these individual politicians to benefit, they must Commit immoral and in most cases illegal acts.
ReplyDeleteNow from a societal Point of View voters are given empty promises or even bribed by politicians to get votes. When they are finally elected and time has passed, they promises made to voters become a lost memory to the politicians. After the elections they will go into hiding until the next election and follow the same process, making more promises.
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
It is a real life situation faced in society every year.Politicians always make dreams and promises to the villagers just to use them to get votes. They do this every year and the villagers believe them every time.Without the people voting for them they can't do this to us every year. The villagers needs to get United with each other and make a difference
DeleteThe phrase “Mary living’ well while Marta ketching hell.” Simply means that Mary is living better than Marta who has to struggle in order to provide her needs.
ReplyDeleteApplying the phrase to today’s in terms of political and social environment, the politician tend to have a better living than us the people who they are representing. In the story it shows us how Hon. Jonas Parker has abandoned his constituency for 4 years, and now since an election is coming up, he went to the area to bribe his people to get their vote. That’s exactly what is happening in Belize today. The politician come around bribing and promising people all kind of things just to get a vote, and when they do give their vote, they still end up with nothing. The citizens fail to realize that they are the only who is suffering and not the politician. Everyone is trying to make a living, and the politician just come about and take advantage of the people. In a couple of weeks you will be seeing plenty of campaigners at your area persuading you to vote. But vote for who? The area representative has never come about checking his area and seeing if everyone is okay. So who should they vote for? And like I said earlier, the Belizeans fail to realize that they are being used. And if they do realize it, the politician can just give them a $50 note and they will gladly vote for them.
This story is absolutely a reflection of post independent in Belize because the only time a politician will come and visit you is when they need your vote for the upcoming election. And people are still using the vats to get water and we can also see the lot of potholes in the street because of poor water drainage.
The statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” means as a politician Hon. Jonas Parker is more fortunate and living comfortably and the residents of his constituency are suffering and live poverty. The most difficult choice a politician must ever make is whether to be a hypocrite or a lair. In the story, Hon. Jonas Parker was recognised as “the silver tongued talker.” I’m assuming before he became a Minister, The Right Honourable had all the right words and list of goals he would have accomplished when elected. I believe life’s better with surprises but it wasn’t a surprise that after being voted in as the Area Representative Hon. Jonas Parker neglected his area and had done nothing for his supporters. In reality, these are the same problems we are faced with as a country from both political parties. The leaders & ministers are better off than us enriching their families and using government resources for personal gain. While countless amounts of Belizeans families continue to live in poverty. They are unable to make ends meet, to put food on the table, educate their children, and to get proper healthcare.
ReplyDeleteThe story is a reflection of post-Independence Belize because the trouble with our country is that there are too many politicians who believe with a conviction based on experience, that you can fool all the people all the time. It’s like a cycle and the political climate hasn’t changed things are still the same. Ministers in Belize can be compared to fine wine & good cheese that is often scarce. The only time a representative’s constituency is not being neglected are on special occasions such as municipal & general elections. Politicians that would not even look your way for the past four years will now greet you by first name and stop long enough to listen to the smallest details of your every concern.
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
In one of the young stories, the representative, the young man stated in the last paragraph that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. In terms of political environment this proverb means that politicians are living well and in a good life while other people are struggling for their life to get a plate of food to eat. Politicians tend to believe that they are the one who rule place or country but they don’t realize that they are living well thanks to the hard working people which is struggling to get their things. When politics time comes to its near date politicians will start to fix roads, public buildings, and visit homes begging for votes or they even buy the people’s vote. Well in this story we can notice that when it will soon be elections after four years Hon. Jonas Parker decide to go visit his constituency. The representative tend to forget who live where. After four years he neglected his consistency he now have a tendency to show some kind of caring for the people. On the other hand, in the social environment the proverb “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” in my perspective to the social environment means that in today’s society we are living in different financial levels. Some are wealthy, living good and while the poor people are the ones who are working hard to have a good standard of living. The bad part of this is that the wealthy people might not get the money honestly while other people the work hard to get money in order to get their things or for their family.I think that yes this story is a reflection of post-independence in Belize since the description of this story is similar to what in today’s life is happening in our country Belize. The same thing that Hon. Jonas Parker does in this story the same thing almost all representative do in Belize. As soon elections is coming representative starts visiting their consistency and start begging for votes after they done neglected the people and some of them even offer money for them to get the people votes. When elections finish and they done get the position they wanted they forget of the people if they are okay or they need any kind of help. The same way Hon. Jonas Parker behave in this story the same way representative from Belize behave. All of this representative have to get to know what they are giving the people in return for their vote and electing them.
ReplyDeleteYoung, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
“Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”, this phrase refers to politics, where the candidates that stay with the position of government, are the ones that are living well. This is just the way all politicians live, depending from the citizens. The people in the country are the ones that are “kecthing hell”, because they need to work hard to survive and pay their tax, etc., to maintain the government. In this story “The Representative” it shows that the politicians only visit your house when it is time for elections. This is the time when they go from house to house visiting everybody and even offering money to people and promising many things. This is the only time when they actually remember that we exist because they need us so that they can win. The government should always be pendent of what are the people needs, which roads need to be fix, how is the people living and what are the problems in the country. They only start do things when elections are coming up so that the people see that they are actually doing something and they can stay in the position again.
ReplyDeleteVery well said,I strongly agree with you for the most part the only time you will see them and when they will remember they need us is around election time.If it's not around election just to get a little help from them you would need to wait months or even years before they get back to us.Around election time they come looking for you, they go to you, just to use us I would say.The country is not standing up for what is right anymore. It doesn't matter of your level of education anymore it's who you know and pull strings I would say.

ReplyDeleteThe story “Mary living well while Marta living hell” politic has an impact on the society, both in a social and political aspect. Young’s whole sense of politics in Belize is to choose our people who can govern this country better.
ReplyDeleteIn 1991, young wrote about independent Belize. After Belize became independent from Great Britain, Representatives are formed to be a government. Their responsibilities was to represent the people of the country and not a particular famous group. In Belize politics is a drama between two parties and this affect the society in general. The reasons are it distributes people in to two political parties. Who ever won the election when they get and into government they look at only their supporter. The people that did not support them on election are not seen at all by the ruling party. This also create negative barriers between people and the society. It also cause discrimination, while others enjoy the good political benefits on the other hand we have people not enjoying any benefits at all. As young stated “Mary living well while Marta living well” has greatly affected not only Marta but a huge amount of people. For this reason we tend to find poverty, lack of health facilities, Poor infrastructure, education and it goes on.
When we consider the political aspect, those in the house of representative are elected and do when in power. What they tend to do is when they are in power they find who they need and who they don’t need. So then do we know how to run and independent country? Simple truth is “no” we can’t. Politics is gust propaganda and lies. They simply don’t give a dahm.

Well said mr. Cho. it seems as though the government have forgotten what it means to actually run a country. no wonder all the immigrants and other people feel that they can do whatever they want in OUR country. The citizens are the ones that allow this to happen by voting these people in. They simply think of themselves and could care less of the people in their constituency, especially about the ones living in the poor areas. some children do not even know the name of their Area Representatives, much less how they look. People need to open their eyes and be aware of the things happening in the country.
DeleteVery true ( attention catcher information), I also feel that it is only from a change in the parties behaviours would change society and politics would be the way it should. I believe that this most important in having a change.
DeleteIn this story, the statement, "Mary living well while Marta living hell", is basically referring to Mr. Jones who is living quite comfortable and contented while poor people is suffering. This story is definitely a reflection of post-independence Belize because nowadays politicians are just in this for a 'COME-UP' and to grab all they can grab and pocket for themselves and their families. And not worrying about the people in their area. Only time you'll see them pitch on your door step is around election time. This is when they come to you as if they are so concerned of how you're living and come tell you what you want to hear. Politicians are just a B U N C H. O F. S C A MS.
ReplyDelete@ Jinel Flowers. I fully agree with your supporting points, it is true and is proven each period that the politicians has no interest in helping the people. Instead their objective is to use the people as tools when needed, which yes makes them a scam because nothing that is uttered from their mouths is later or in any time fulfilled.
DeleteThe statement "Mary livin' well while Martha ketching hell" in terms of political and social environment represented in Young's work simply means the ministers have it all while the people are punishing. It was only since the streets of the village was flooded, the villagers had to make small bridges to reach their houses, that the minister came around to fool the people like if he wanted. He saw it as an opportunity to get votes. For years he had not came around in the village that he didn't even remember the name of the villagers when he goes to their house. The minister made promise to the people to offer the help and after receiving their votes they disappear. Now the villagers don't want nothing t do with him.He living high class life while the villagers are trying to live a comfortable life.
ReplyDelete2) This story is indeed a reflection of post independence belize because most,if not all, area representativeonly render assistance if they see votes to receive. The time when election is near, they campaign, fix the streets, fix houses etc.If the job is not finished before election then you get neglected and they forget about you.

This is soo true! its happening all around us right about now I mean only three weeks before election! All they want to do is "help" but the question is whom they want to help and that's surely not the Belizean people. The only persons they are trying to help is themselves by fixing the streets. Some people might think they are helping but that's all apart of the "vote for me I'll be by your side" act, to gain back your trust to screw you over again!
Delete"Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell."
ReplyDeleteIn this statement there is a comparison between two person; Mary and Marta. Mary is the one whose living well in comfort because of the circumstances; meanwhile, Marta is the total opposite with the same circumstances making an negative impact on her life. A political perspective of this is that, in politics the same political voters is not treated in a fairly well manner as promised and the representatives live a life of all they can dream of . Due to the fact of the importance of the people votes, individuals are elected by the confidence of the voters in trying to better the lives for all of society , however they are neglected and ministers live the life of a king for which only they are benefiting. The people are left to struggle through their lives due to the fact that they are not atleast assisted by the standing government/representative as they should and was promised. Many are neglected and forgotten after their votes has been cast, which leads them into being reluctant into once again voting. They would know when the time is near to vote again , because the cold hearted minister would come around again as their routine. They come around and see the critical positions the people are in ; scraps to patch their houses, london bridges and the terrible swamps that surrounds the yard. As of each time voters a required to vote all of those things are promised to be dealt with but never fulfilled. The Mary and Marta situation is then continued.

ReplyDelete2) This is surely a reflection of post independence in Belize currently, whereby the representatives only comes by when the" time of decision" is near again. They fully neglect their duties in assisting their people; the ones who helped them reach where they're are. This problem happens each time, they come with their petty, fake faces with all kinds of different excuses and again more unfulfilled promises. Meanwhile finding them when needed is like looking for something that is extinct. Most of them are just users! who has no intentions of helping but instead reaping all they could; their main objective.

I surely agree with you, the political representatives only need our votes to be leader after they got what they wanted they forget about everyone. the only thing then important to them is the money and the position they hold
DeleteYoung stated, “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”, in one of his stories, this is clearly a good reflection of post- independence Belize, because on an economic context Belize is a country where all the money moves in the pockets of a few. A country full of cultural and economic indifferences where those at the top of the food chain care less of those at the bottom. This clearly illustrates that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer. This shows the economic and political philosophy in Belize where the political representatives only look for the people when elections are near.

"Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell."
ReplyDeleteI personally understand the quote above, as it basically saying the representative of the area lives a luxurious life, flashing his high end air conditioned . Buick around, while most people aren't as comfortable as him . Most people living curently within poorly developed areas would call this scenario a reflection of independence but on the other hand I rebut to such statement. Because at the end off the day the conventional " heary soh" Belizean would be envious on a representative due to the fact he/she possess a nice vehicle and they quickly jump to conclusion and claim they steal money . The representative possession pays a decent salary keep that in mind . And then go to idea that the representatives steal money and have the country in debt. At the end of the day all government around the world owe tremendous amount of money to the world Bank . And Belize is a country whom lives on loans can't ignore that fact . Is the quote above a reflection on independence? I personally find this nuetral due to the fact that persons do actually get help . While others stay home ignorant and jobless and hope the government would spoon feed them, their entire lives .

I absolutely enjoyed your interpretation of the proverb and your perspective on the question. I like that you mentioned that though there are some representatives that may fall behind in their duties as a leader, there can be honest, hard working representatives.
DeleteAlso, to say that the prose can and cannot be a representation of post-independence Belize is truly a unique point of view since your words do have truth to them.I especially liked the part where you spoke about the individual that would sit back and wait to live off handouts from the government. The presentation of your details really shined some new light on whether or not this prose reflects on Belize after independence. Your comment sparked several thoughts and had me questioning myself on how can there be progress if both parts of the government (the leaders and the people) are not functioning properly.
I enjoyed the way you brought across your opinion in a slightly different perspective from others and myself. As you rightly mentioned, we should not put all representatives in the same group and judge them all wrongly for some of them do help and do care. Election time is presently nearing in our country and i can truly say that one of the representatives that i am familiar with is one of the "good" and "caring" representatives that you speak of. This is why it makes it easier for me to connect with your response on a personal level. And as well, you are right again on speaking on behalf of those in the community that are different from the lazy ones who expect to spoon fed, yet get angry when they only come around fro election time. This is why those that do their own work, not relying on them to come around, appreciate them more when they do visit them.
DeleteAyye I
Deletereally like the way you bring across your point, it is indeed true that you have some people that are ignorant and arrogant and they will stay jobless blaming the government for them not having a job, But truth is do they think the job will come to them??
The Representative – Colville Young
ReplyDelete“Mary livin’ well while Marta keching hell’ is the phrase used by the young man in ‘The Representative’, Young (1991). This statement is the most important section of the piece since it provides insight into the entire society at large and not only to the residents of Wishwilly Street. The first portion, “Mary livin’ well” represents the people living at the apex of the proverbial social pyramid while the latter part, “Marta keching hell” symbolizes the members of the society placed at the bottom of this pyramid. The young man uses this phrase to indirectly refer to how the honorable Jonas Parker is living a lavished life while others like the young man’s family are ‘Keching hell’ when living in the shanty conditions of the constituency. Young vividly displays the harsh reality of the neighborhood’s condition by comparing the boy’s rags and rickety house to Parker’s fine clothing and air conditioned Buick. Young also brings further meaning to the proverb by adding that Parker, like fellow members of his class, chooses to neglect the lower class while he tries to take advantage of every opportunity to make a quick buck and leaving them damned and in distress.
This phrase becomes almost all too true for most politicians in post-independence Belize since having a position in the government was and is still seen as a source of easy income and business opportunity for the area representatives. As a byproduct, this usually means that the people’s representative puts priority to his business interests and puts the country’s needs second. The interest of self gain displayed by the various governments is perhaps the main contributing factor to the nations’ slow progress and gradual growth. Although some governments have tried to change this view on government and its purpose, the practice is still common and brings Young’s prose to reality.

ReplyDeleteIn the last paragraph of Young story, The Representatives, the young man stated that “Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell”. This proverb is clearly showing the standard of living between the Area Representative and people of the constituency. They use the millions of dollars they receive from government and better the lives of their family, friends and themselves; they have everything that they want, living the luxurious lifestyle. While on the other hand the people of the constituency are living the lifestyle of catch and kill. This is a clear reflection of post-independence Belize; you only see and know your Area Representative when election time is near. They come around and try to bribe you for your vote, and tell what all they will do they win in the election but they’re only making believe. After the election we don’t see them again, when you need something you have go and make an appointment to see them.

In one of Young’s (1991) stories, The Representatives, the young man stated in the last paragraph that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. Well what this proverb is basically stating is that “Mary” referring to Mr Jonas Parker, the representative, continues to live his wealthy life style, caring less about his people in his constituency while “Marta”, his people, continues to live in poverty, or in conditions that a very extreme. In the passage this was exercised clearly how high of a living Mr Parker has, dressed up in his nice shirt stepping out his fancy car to come in a neighbourhood full of “shanties” like how he had referred to them. Too many a times we see this happening. Ministers are sworn in by the people, bearing in mind what these “silver-tongued” individuals told them or had promised them. And at the end of the day not one thing had change. Your all sorts of lies and bribery when it’s time for them to be sworn in and again too many a time not one damn had change.
ReplyDelete2) This story is a reflection of post-independence Belize because its only when election is near then you see all the representative out campaigning and all of a sudden acting like they’re so concerned about the people. Belizean fail to realize that as these individual gets in seat they are completely ignored and probably won’t even see these people again until the next 4 years when their votes are need again. They sell themselves for a $50, What can $50 do in this time of living? By the time you go to a grocery store and buy four items your bill is already at $30.

I agree fully with the way you expressed passion towards not liking this type of treatment from those representatives who behave in such a manner. They tend to feel as though it does not affect people because it does not affect them. You are also right in saying that a simple $50 bill can take them no where far andthe problem does not even fall on giving them more money,it is simply about genuinely caring about their concerns. I support you on this one.

ReplyDeleteIn the last paragraph of Young (1991) stories, The Representatives, the young man stated that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. This proverb is being clear of the difference between the Representative, ‘Mary’ who lives a luxurious life along with their family and is probably eating well 3-4 times per day and the constituency ‘Marta’ who may face challenges in their life daily just to get in proper meals for the day for their families and themselves. There is surely a contrast being highlighted. The people of the community can choose to look up to him as a good leader who may help them or dislike him for his dishonesty, disloyalty or probably for being jealous.
ReplyDeleteThe story is a reflection of post-independence Belize as it shows the way the Representatives think in order to get votes from the people of the constituency. They are gone for 4 years until the time for election returns. This is when they suddenly remember the needs of people and still may choose to bribe them instead of helping them.

I agree with what you said that its the community's fault if they decide to accept him as a great leader or a disloyal, and dishonest. And you know when some representative are do in seats you have some people out the constituency too who lives like the "Mary" and "Marta" lifestyle, because when some particular individual are in seat some of the people live good and as happy and the ones who didn't and weren't fool live under stress and poverty because they didn't vote for that person. And indeed this is similar to nowadays because the representative only come around near election bribing the voters.
DeleteI agree with what you are saying because Mark King is my area rep for the UDP. The only times I ever get to see him is when election is near or when he is on the news hitting on some ones child after he gets drunk. Yet he still walks around wanting the people to hold on to a promise he made to them years ago, to fix their houses, get a piece of land and other promises but as soon as election passes he disappears again. What are the people to do then wait for election to see him again again???
Delete"Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell."

In a sense, I actually agree with your interpretation of people earning their means of living and such. But, in my opinion, your impression sounds a bit biased. Yes, maybe the salary you mentioned could be the cause of such luxuries, but who is to say what they might or might not be doing? No one can really attest to exactly how and where all our country's money is going. Therefore, obviously eyebrows will be raised and suspicions will be brought up if things look too 'fishy' in the public's eye. That's a natural reaction. So the "heary so" that you mentioned will forever be an issue in such situations.
DeleteIn the last paragraph the young man, Barney, stated that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. This quote is simply saying that the representative Honorable Jonas Harold Parker who is Mary in this case is living a happy and luxurious life while on the other hand his constituency (Marta) is punishing trying to live not “the” life but simply “a” life. The people of the society look at the way the ministers and leaders live, the clothes they wear, the vehicle they drive, the house they live in and they judge or assume these individuals without knowing all the facts. I believe that even though there are disloyal, dishonest and selfish individuals in power (government) that only think about the betterment of themselves and their family; the truth of the matter is that there are still maybe not plenty but a few leaders that try to help the less fortunate. On the other hand, there are some individuals of the society that are just simply lazy, ignorant and small minded that they just sit back and expect the government and others to give them a better life even though they aren’t putting in any effort or showing any interest whatsoever.
ReplyDeleteI think that this story reflects on the post-independence Belize because even though I’ve mentioned before that there are still a few representatives that do help their constituency, the reputation of them all is already destroyed. Most Belizeans have already identified the way in which most of these leaders operate. As mentioned in the story these disloyal representatives only exists in the lives of their people when election time comes around. The minute election time comes, these leaders come with all sorts of bribery and promises. They are voted in and you don’t see their faces at your door until 4 years later when election time comes again with the same promises that are yet to be fulfilled. The sad truth about this situation is that even though there are good representatives still around, all of their reputation is somewhat destroyed because of the disloyal, dishonest and selfish representatives around.

Hey Breasia, I liked that you did not blame all representatives for abandoning their constituency. It is true that a minority of Belizeans don't have the ambition to go out and do something productive for themselves. This goes to show the lack of care and pride we have as politicians and citizens of Belize.
DeleteI agree with what your saying although it is hard to see i too believe that their are still some trustworthy politicians out there who are judged by what they actually worked for and are not given the credit for what they have done. But this just goes to show on both sides though because the people in the poor communities who really need the help arent getting it but the ones who always have their hands out are still complaining.
DeleteThe phrase “Mary livin well while Marta Ketching hell’’ stated by the young man Barney at the end of the story is a unique proverb. It is a comparison in the story which means that many politicians such as Honorable Jonas Harold Parker live better than many Belizean citizens. The statement is very important in the story due to the fact that it compares “Mary” to politicians in general and “Martha” to the people in the country. Mr. Parker is a part of a political party and as any other politician he is only a part of this group because of the advantages. He clearly is not interested in the citizen’s well-being but only in his selfish needs. Mr. Parker, like most politicians, not only does not know his people’s names but has not visited or in any way has tried to help the citizens. After 4 years he decides to start visiting because it will help his campaign. This is just another addition to show how conceited Mr. Jones is. Politicians are famous for selling dreams to citizens for their own purpose. They live a luxurious life while some citizens have a difficult time making ends meet.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I believe that the story is a reflection of post-independence Belize because it is still present in our society and government. This cycle of political injustice has been happening ever since we got our independence as a county. Although there are some good politicians, most of the political members are just out there for their personal help and advantages. Every 4 years they are in your back for you to vote for them and their mouths are full of beautiful lies of change.
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
In all honesty, the quote "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell" can either be accurate or inaccurate. It's talking about how politicians and area representatives often take advantage of the things set out to benefit the people and use them to live expensive lifestyles. Personally, I believe that whether or not everyone believes that, who are we to judge or condemn our representatives without knowing if such accusations are precise or not? Who are we to decide how they should or shouldn't live simply because we might lack the benefits they have? It's safe to say that maybe these people know how to budget and save money for their wants and needs, unlike the rest. Yes, it's ironic that these wants conveniently come along soon after they gain a certain level or power and superiority, but that still doesn't prove anything. Either way, the quote above could be a reflection of Belize's post independence, but it all depends on your own personal opinion on what is considered right or wrong in our society.

In one of Young’s (1991) stories. The representatives, the young man stated in the last paragraph that “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”. This proverb is simply saying that Mary in this story is Mr Jonas Parker is living the luxurious life-the one who can dress nicely every day, drive the latest type of vehicle and eating at the top most restaurants in town while Marta (his people) are living in hell they’re all suffering in poverty which is very unfair to them because they expected due to promises for a change from Parker before he was voted in. Parker is one of many selfish area representatives who only come and visit or/and gives promises to people and “try” to quickly make a change in there respected area only when election time floats around.
ReplyDeleteThis story is a reflection of post-independence in Belize because only when elections is near you get to see the representatives doing meet and greet with their people or even quickly trying to fix their “shanti houses-how Parker described it”, The pot holes are being filled. All kind of promises and dreams are made to the people and some of them actually buy it-believing that it will happen.

In the short story ’’The Representatives’’, by Young, C. N. (1991). The phrase "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell", emphasizes on the way our county is being govern in our today’s modern society. Politicians, who are elected by the citizens of a country, are often living great in their big fancy houses and expensive vehicles, while the same people that elected them in are being neglected and their existence are not of important to them anymore. Additionally, some of the citizens are homeless living in poverty and they are not getting any help from the politician because they are living a wealthy lifestyle. Yes this story is a reflection of post-independence Belize because to this present day politicians are still exercising the same practise, after every four years gearing up for election they visit their constituency, therefore, they only visit when it’s convenient to them in trying to bribe potential voters.
ReplyDeleteReference: Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full. Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
I agree with your statment completely beacuse while the ministers are out living life with all the money that the people pay taxes with or money that were given to help the people with. You also stated about how there are alot of homeless people other and the leaders are not helping them and this is a very true statement.
DeleteI fully agree with your opinion because all these politicians in Belize only know you when Election is near. If you are not a high tax payer and seeking help from them, you are completely wasting your time because Politician only want your vote.
DeleteI agree with what you have said here, it is true that these politicians of today still act the same way they did about 30 years ago, they believe in bribing the constituency, flashing ideas of commitment and reality for better education and development of our country, yet as they are elected into power, they neglect their promises, and the people are left to continue their suffering. Until the next election time, which is almost the only time you will see your area representative, will these promises be replayed.

ReplyDeleteAs a society, instead of working together, we segregate, we divide ourselves, and we live with the mentality of each man for his own. This proverb, simply put, is describing how ignorant, the politicians are, of their own community, their own constituency. They dig in their “deep” pockets and pick out a crumb to feed to the starving people. They neglect the same people who stood out in the blazing sun to rally for them, and they only pay attention when they need to. It’s all about the reaping for these politicians. Our society as we know it was formed way before our grandmothers were. Undoubtedly, we all grow up with the influences around us. Our country, as it is, remains largely structured the way it was some 34 years ago, declining aim and increasing power. Instead of being a proactive country (all streets would be fixed by now with proper drainage) we become a country that operates on reacting to problems, which we create. Those in power “Mary” seem to be “livin well”, while those in poverty, “Martha” seem to be “Ketching hell.”
ReplyDeleteYoung, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
In one of Young (1991) stories, The Representatives, the young man stated in the last paragraph that "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell". This proverb is very symbolic of what takes place both in this story and in our Belizean society. In the political environment, the politicians would be classified as "Mary", they live lavish lifestyles, while the people they are supposed to be representing aren’t well privileged, and we can classify them as being "Marta". In the story, it was made very clear that Honorable Jones Harold Parker financial situation is one that only the people he represent can dream of. It even gives us the reason of being in politics, mainly the “perks”. It reflect exactly what happens in today’s society. Politicians (“Mary”) getting away with a lot of corruption, making their wallets thick, living well is an understatement, and just giving people the crumbs of what they have and bribing them with so little money for a vote. While the people (“Marta”) live in deprived conditions in constituency where they’re representative’s only come around when election is a few weeks away.
ReplyDeleteThis brings us to the social aspect, politicians only come around when they are in need of a vote. In the story, Mr. Parker comes around only because he need votes for the upcoming elections. He shows little concern to the conditions his constituency is in and seemed to be very proud of it (the flooded streets).
The Story is indeed a reflection of post-independence Belize. Our society haven’t changed at all. The same thing that the writer wrote about in this story (1991), is still happening today. Our mentality haven’t changed. Politicians pay for votes, wins, and then you see them until election time comes around again.
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
Hey Fernando, I agree with you. These politicians seems to be full of themselves and are being total users towards the people of Belize. They need to understand that it's not all about them; it is about the people of Belize and their well-being and especially the children because they are our future.
DeleteI 100% agree with Fernando, because the politicians of our country only care about themselves and their well fair which should be the other way around they need to worry about the well fair of the people in their country and make sure that the standards of living improve and let our country move forward.
DeleteI agree very much with what you are saying Fernando, our politicians today are not into politics because they want to better our country but because they want all the benefits they will get. They only want to feel the power and luxuries that come along with being a Politician. They focus on making their lives better and their families’ lives better, while us, the rest of the country get to suffer because they do not worry about creating a better future for us and the new generation to come.
DeleteThe Belizean phrase 'Mary livin while Marta ketching hell has an authentic meaning. The social aspect of this has to do with the people of Belize. Most of us are ungrateful, in a sense that we are living better than some people in the parts of the country and yet we still complain. We need to appreciate what we have and try to help people who are not as fortunate as us. Besides, being selfish us not a good trait. In a political aspect, this would no doubt be about politics. Most, if not all our politicians are living it up in their big houses and expensive cars while the people in the area for which hey represent are doing very poorly. Their job as representative should be to uplift the people instead of only thinking about themselves and their needs. What about the needs of the people? Everyday houses are falling and the people plead to their representative for help but no answer. They should be ashamed of themselves.
ReplyDeleteThis story is definitely a reflection of post independence Belize. Nowadays, politicians only come to you for one thing and that is your vote. The only time you'll see them is around election. Maybe, once or twice other times but very present around election. Although, it surely should not be that way at all. The politicians need to earn the votes of the people not by bribes or selling dreams but by their actions.

I agree with you Michelle, the only time that we as a country and as a constituency are looked upon by the politicians is when they need votes for election. And you are right when you said the job of the representative is to uplift the people instead of being selfish. They should all work with the people to create a better country, a better life and to help people from poverty instead of looking down on people.
Deletei agree with what you are saying Michelle. I like how u looked at it in a different aspect, that people should be grateful for what they have. And in the political aspect, politicians stray away from their job of uplifting their constituency and they instead be selfish.
DeleteMichelle, I couldn't have said it any better myself. I liked how you used actual reference around us that is unfortuately true. The politicans ignore their duties to their comstituency because they're living the luxurous lives while the people worry about their next meal.
DeleteHonorable Parker finds it difficult to relate to the people of his constituency. He is the “fat Mary” the quote make reference to because his air conditioned vehicle is such a contrast to the deplorable streets and “dog siddung” homes he is all attempting to win over in his election season. “Marta is ketching hell” when the mosquito bites will no doubt lead to Malaria. His five dollars meagre pay out in comparison to his four thousand dollars a month is a shameful bribe. If he complains about his “low salary how could five dollars be enough to assist this poverty stricken family. When he returns to the perks of his good political career the people will be “ketching hell” until the next politician decides to makes his way across their rickety bridge. That no doubt will be in the next four years.
ReplyDeleteThis story is very much a reflection of post- independence Belize, simple because it’s amazing how things use to be in the past and the politicians of today seems to be following in the same direction. They do not want to change this trend of not helping their people or even try to get to know them, it’s like after election they all forget who put them there and why. Furthermore, they do not even fulfill half of what they put into their manifestos. Most if not all the politicians in Belize is full of/with nothing but empty promises and self-interest after and before they get elected.

In the story The Representative that was written by Colville Young state a very important phrase in his last paragraph that says “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell,” the phrase simply mean that the area representative or Politian of our country is living well while most of our people is living in poverty and who needs their help. The only time you would get to see the area representative or a Politian is when election is coming up. They will be knocking on your door asking you to vote for them or paying you to vote for them and pertained they care about the people while for so many year they forget about them. they need to come around more often and find how the people with in their area is doing and find out who need the most help and help them. Don’t only come around when it’s time for election.
ReplyDeleteThe Story is a reflection of post-independence Belize because the Politian is still doing the same thing. When you hear election is coming then you get to see all the Politian. When Election Day comes and they win you can forget about the promises they promise you because you will not see them until election time again
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions
Your statement is completely true, the month or weeks before election is the only time you will see your area representative because its crunch time for him , he needs all the votes he can get so he will promise the world to the people of his area but as the election is finish he is no where to be found.

ReplyDelete"Mary livin' well while Martha ketching hell" is a proverb that explains how the people who tend to say they will help you or they are benefiting you are living so much better than you while you, who is a essence to them or needed to them are living in a life of struggles. This proverb is a real reflection to our life as human beings because a lot of people for example our Prime Minister or Ministers of our country put on a front that they are here for us and they will make sure this will happen when they get in power but in reality when they do win and are in power we don't even get 1% of what they were promising.
ReplyDeleteMany Politicians come around when its close to elections and come around 'surveying', asking a lot of question about your living status and how they can help, when in reality they don't really care they just want you to vote for them come election day . So they promise you that they will make sure this happens and they will give you this and they will fix this just to ensure a vote from you. This story is a reflection of post-independence in Belie because this Government only cares about heavy tax payers, while the south side gets neglected as always because they say we are full of gangs and violence when its they who lead us people to steal and get idol and get mischievous.
Young, C. N. (1991). Pataki full.Benque Viejo del Carmen, Bze: Cubola productions.
I agree fully with the information you present since i have witnessed this occuring currently in my community. Politicians tell you what you want to hear and leave when they get what they want to me if any criminals are created or seen its them the one's who lie, the ones who steal, the one's who are only there when they need something and disappear when they get it.

ReplyDeleteIn the short story, “The Representative,” the statement “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell,” it means that some people are living well–off while others are living in poverty. In the Representative, the candidate, Honorable Jonas Parker, had been given an ultimatum by his party leader for Parker had been neglecting his constituency going into the fifth year. We learn that he is in politics, not to serve the people, but to serve his own interests. He wants to maintain a certain life style, what he calls the three P’s: power, paycheck and perks. He shows up to gain their votes putting on a fake smile, using bribery and false promises. Parker has sunk so low, that he shamelessly tries to bribe an eight-year-old child with sweets, and her brother with five dollars. Although he pretends to like them, he tells them lies such as his having given them gifts that were, in fact, given to them by their Uncle Bill. Parker, in reality, was disgusted by their poverty. The young man, though, sees through him, that the government and politicians put on a façade, pretending to be nice. While live a high life, the poor suffer: “Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell”.
ReplyDeleteThis story is a reflection of post–independence Belize. Although Belizeans have taken over the government of our country from the British, our local government representatives bribe voters with turkey, money and promise of land, and other material goods to get the citizens to vote for them. Meanwhile, the real issues of unemployment, crime and poverty are ignored. People are encouraged to vote on the basis of what they can get in the short term. Meanwhile good governance by our very own Belizean politicians is placed in the back burner, and when the politicians get into power by the votes of the poor, they then forget them!

I agree with what you are saying here especially in your last paragraph, because the example in the story about the bribery is a perfect reflection of the corruption going on in our society, from about 34 years and counting, our society has always been treating the people of this country, the less fortunate, as a minority, as a bitter excuse to why they should be in power, and when they are in power, they do little about it.
DeleteThe information that you gave were correct, especially on how Belizeans that bribes for votes, it’s a sad reality. It’s a reality that somehow blinds the Belizeans from years of issues like those that you mentioned. I also like how you referenced evidence from the story but you also could have used actual evidence in today's world.
DeleteI very much agree with you, Isabelle. Politicians put on a facade. they pretend to understand our needs and wants just to gain our votes, when in reality they just want the vote to be in power and then do as they please.
ReplyDeleteThe saying, "Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell" is referring to individuals that live well while the poor suffer. This perfectly fits into the discussion regarding the political and social environment represented in Young’s work “The Representative”. In young’s work and in reality, the politicians are living well while the people that voted them into power are isolated until the next election ofcourse. “The Representative,” also shows how the politicians alienate the people and despise the way they live but rather than developing and improving the community they’re ignoring the problems.
ReplyDeleteI believe that this story is a reflection of post-independence Belize. This can be supported especially since we are nearing election. Politicians are giving out money, having parties and distributing gifts that will, unfortunately gain their votes. The people are taking the temporary “gifts”, in exchange for years of suffering just as the children took the gifts in “The Representative”. It is a sad reality that may never be broken due to the normality of the situation.

'Mary livin' well while Marta ketching hell' is a Belizean creole proverb, this proverb is a reflection of the political and social environment in Belize. It basically means that while the rich are living it up without a care in the world the less fortunate are struggling to meet their basic needs and are living from hand to mouth. In the story ‘The Representative’ the political figure running in the division is going around house to house trying to convince the residents to vote for him. This representative honourable Jonas Harold Parker is only around because elections is near, he has neglected this area for four years. With little know how of who stills lives in the area he goes to campaign. For the four years he had abound his area and the condition of it has dilapidated considerable but he didn’t care he was living well in his nice home and everything he had it all, could care less about the people in his division; leaving them to suffer through the horrible conditions.
ReplyDeleteThe way of life/ thinking by politicians are still visible today. As it relates to the social environment the rich get richer and the poor suffer; they carry on with their daily lives with no worry or care about others and their struggles as long as their getting more money, then life is good in their eyes. This story does reflect post-independence in Belize, however I believe that there more being done for the one struggling but there is still a few who act the way the representative did in this story.

ReplyDelete“Mary livin’ well while Marta ketching hell” A phrase used by the young man after (the silver tongued talker) left. This phrase is not so common it is rarely used, but really it means what it is saying. In this story it talks about the representative who after four years, because he is in need of votes again is going out to visit his constituency like all politicians do. They go around when they need people.
“Mary” in the story is referring to politicians who is living well, after being put there in that position by the people they forgot or pretend they forgot their purpose and start or try living their fantasy. While “Marta” which is referring to the people, the voters who are unfortunately forgotten and struggling to meet their everyday needs. This is happening in our country Belize, politicians come when they need the people and then after election, when they get elected and in their position they go their merry way living well enjoying their perks, and making unwise decisions especially in spending of public funds and then not to be seen until election time again. Our people need to be more educated that they need to exercise their rights and responsibility to vote and not to be dependent on politicians. As a citizen that is our responsibility to elect our government. Bribery only last for a very short while.

ReplyDeleteIn the short story “The Representatives” the statement made by the young man in the last paragraph “Mary livin’ well while Martha ketching hell” is an old proverb not commonly used but has a meaning quite straight forward. This term represented in the political and social environment simply highlights how “Mary” referring to the representative for the area Hon. Jonas Parker lives a much more comfortable more fortunate lifestyle where he is able, as reference in the paragraph, to wear his least worth clothing and still appear at his best to “Martha” referring to not only the children or their mother but the entire community since, due to the fact that, this politician is to represent this area and its people he hasn’t been doing his job. Jonas, the Honourable area representative, obviously caters for his well being and not the people whom he represents. This can be seen from his approach how can you run an area with conditions you wouldn’t want to live in yourself and to overshadow that attempt he doesn’t even know the surname of the family he visits. It even gets sadder when the politician realizes that he is a ghost to his own people, which boldly shows how much he has been of a helping hand to his people and represented community.
ReplyDeleteThis story, “The Representative”, is a strong reflection of Post-Independence in Belize and is a hundred percent accurate representation of politicians and the people. All politicians are the same and seem to have a traditional tendency of appearing and disappearing when they feel like. Before election time is a prey-predator season the politicians take the new young voters into captivity with bribes and fake smiles and act as if though they are there for their area but after elections is when you really realize who they really represent, their selves. All the plans of house creations, street reformations and community transformations can be kissed goodbye until they need your votes again.
